1. General information about owl butterflies
The Noctuidae family includes hundreds of species whose caterpillars are known as owl moths . These moths feed at night on leaves, young shoots, and sometimes even fruit. Vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, as well as ornamental plants in the garden, are particularly affected.
While the inconspicuous butterflies usually fly at dusk, the caterpillars cause the actual damage: They eat holes in the leaves, damage shoots and, in severe infestations, can destroy entire plants.
