1. General information about house dust mites
House dust mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae) are tiny arachnids that are barely visible to the naked eye. They live in mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and stuffed animals . Their diet consists primarily of skin flakes that humans shed daily.
The real problem isn't the mites themselves, but their allergens : Dust mite feces and body debris can trigger allergies, asthma, and respiratory problems. Since mites love warmth and humidity, bedrooms are particularly affected.
